Guidelines and instructions for GP Registrars

A pass or pass with merit achieved in this module of the MRCGP examination will also be accepted as evidence of competence in consulting skills for summative assessment. Candidates should apply for the consulting skills (video) module of the examination via the Examination Department of the RCGP

  • Should a pass not be obtained in the MRCGP, the videotape will be 'fast tracked' and automatically enter the local Deanery summative assessment process. This process is known as the MRCGP/SA Single Route Video

GP Registrars wishing to submit MRCGP/SA Single route video should...

  1. Submit an application for admission to the MRCGP Examination on Form ED/1 (for a 1st application) or ED/2 (for re-application), as appropriate. Applications forms are available from the Examination Department of the RCGP only, and can be downloaded by visiting  http://www.rcgp.org.uk/exams/examination_home/examination_information/application_forms.aspx

  2. Complete the Video Assessment of Consulting Skills – Workbook and Instructions (‘Workbook’) which will be sent to candidates by the Examination Department of the RCGP with application forms or downloaded from http://www.rcgp.org.uk/exams/examination_home/examination_information/video_workbook.aspx

  3. Familiarise themselves with the requirements for both assessment methods particularly with regard to the numbers of consultations requested and how these should be presented, and the case-mix required for the MRCGP examination. The consent form for video recording for assessment purposes is standard to both the Cogped video and MRCGP assessments.
