Sit the MCQ examination when they and their GP trainer feel they are ready.
They will be notified by the Deanery Office and invited to sit the examination
after 3 months of their general practice based training has been completed.
Apply to their Deanery 1 month before they wish to sit the COGPED MCQ
examination. Late applications will be considered under exceptional
circumstances only and any subsequent approval will depend on the availability
of appropriate resources
Be thoroughly familiar with English if they are going to be successful in
summative assessment. However, foreign language translation dictionaries
(non-medical) may be used provided an invigilator checks and approves them
prior to the examination.
No electrical devices (mobile phones/personal organisers) of any
kind are permitted inside the examination hall although exceptions will
be made in cases of medical needs (e.g. hearing aid).
If a GP Registrar needs extra time to complete the MCQ because of his/her known
dyslexia, they must provide a psychiatrist’s/psychologist’s report confirming
this diagnosis and send this to the Deanery Office, at least 1 month before the
examination date. The amount of extra time allowed is at the individual
Deanery’s discretion.
Bring identification papers, which must include a passport photo
(passport/driving license), to the MCQ examination.
Sign the register before entering the examination hall.
Candidates for the MRCGP examination irrespective of whether they pass or fail
the examination overall, but who satisfy the examiners that their performance
in the MRCGP MCQ is adequate (Pass or Pass with Merit), will be issued with a
letter from the College to this effect. A Pass or Pass with Merit will be
accepted as evidence of competence in the summative assessment MCQ. They should
send this letter to their Deanery Office at the same time as their final VTR1.
The Deanery Office will return the letter from the College to the GP registrar
together with the signed VTR1.
