GP Registrar's Guide

GP Registrars are requested to complete the Summative Assessment Application Form and return this to their Deanery Office.

The following explains the nature and purpose of the COGPED MCQ examination.

Do I have to sit the paper?
In order to receive a CCT or SER (without which you cannot practice as a GP, locum or deputy) it is necessary to pass this paper or achieve an adequate score in the MRCGP MCQ examination.

What if I fail?
You can sit the examination at the next available opportunity.

How many attempts can I make?
GP Registrars failing the COGPED MCQ will be permitted to resit the examination, however the maximum number of attempts at the COGPED MCQ is 5. The NSAB advises discussion with your GP Trainer, Course Organiser with educational experience after a fail. Following 2 failures, issues surrounding failure will need to be discussed between the GP Registrar, Trainer, Course Organiser, Summative Assessment Co-ordinator, Director or Associate Director. GP Registrars should note that Deaneries will charge any doctor, no longer in their GP training period, for undertaking the MCQ.(April 05).

How much does it cost?
There is no charge to take the COGPED MCQ examination for GP Registrars in their GP training period.

How difficult is the examination?
There is no fixed pass rate. The pass mark is determined by calculating a pass mark for each sitting based on the expected performance of a GP registrar of minimum acceptable competence. The pass rate for the COGPED MCQ examination is currently 94%.

What topics are covered?
The questions cover all the areas, which are found in general practice. The proportion of questions in each area is as follows...

  • Internal Medicine (medicine, therapeutics, surgical diagnosis, psychiatry, geriatrics, etc...) - 45% of total
  • Child Health – one sixth of the total
  • Womens/Mens' Health - one sixth of the total
  • External medicine (ENT, eyes, dermatology) - one sixth of the total
  • Practice management - 5% of total

How much preparation will I have to do?
This is an assessment of minimum acceptable competence. If you read the major journals and keep up to date you should have no cause for concern.

What types of questions are in the paper?
With effect from May 2004, the COGPED MCQ paper consists of 170 items of standard true/false questions, 80 extended matching item questions and 10 single best answer questions. The questions cover the full range of activities that comprise modern general practice. There is no negative marking so try to answer all questions.
