A project protocol

This is the procedure that a project will follow. The protocol is an essential part of the planning of a project, and can act as a framework for discussion between the GPR and Trainer.

What should be in a project protocol?

  1. Introduction
    • Title
    • The project question
    • Why it is important and interesting

  2. Existing literature
    • What is already known about this topic
    • What methodologies are appropriate to this study

  3. Methods
    • What methodology is being followed
    • Who are the subjects
    • How are they sampled and recruited
    • What data is to be collected, how and by whom
    • What is the sequence of the project

  4. Results
    • What form will the results take
    • How will they be presented
    • Who is the audience
    • What difference will the results make

The project question
This is the key. If you are planning a project you must get this right. All the other items in the protocol depend on the nature of the question and flow from it in a logical way.

The question should be:

  • Important
  • Interesting
  • Focused
  • Answerable
