Guidelines & instructions for GP Registrars

An audit project has been chosen because all general practitioners should be monitoring and improving the quality of care they provide. These skills will form a key part of clinical governance within primary care structures, e.g. primary care trusts. The ability to carry out an Audit is therefore a skill of minimal competence for a GP registrar. The Audit should be the GP registrar's own work with appropriate support from the practice team.

Should the Audit not pass the assessment and be returned to the GP Registrar, then advice from the GP trainer, and or Course Organiser should be sought.

GP Registrars should note that Deaneries only accept new audits, although revision of minor errors in the original submission may be allowed. Advice will be given by the Coordinator or the Deanery Office.

Should the audit fail to pass the summative assessment process, then the GP Registrar will be permitted to submit a further COGPED audit following a period of retraining on audit methods.

Deaneries will check that the original and new submission is not identical.

The duration and nature of this specific retraining should be agreed following careful discussion between the Director, Course Organiser, GP Trainer and GP Registrar.

In the event that this specific period of retraining cannot be completed within the normal duration of the planned GP training period, then the GP Registrar will need to seek an extension of their training.

In the event of failure of the 2nd audit submission the Director will discuss the matter and how to proceed with the GP Registrar and others involved in their training

To ensure that we continue to provide help and advice to training practices we need access to Audit projects, which are up to date. Your attention is drawn to the 'Audit Projects for Educational Purposes Consent' at the bottom of the COGPED Audit Declaration Form , which we would urge you to sign.
